Louis Lisle is an emerging artist based in Manchester. Lisle graduated from Edinburgh College of Art (ECA) in 2020 and has established a studio where he is continuing to grow his creative practice. His paintings are very visually claustrophobic and dramatic as he applies an array of techniques that take issue with scenarios, structures and emotions observed into the cityscape. The primary focus of his practice is to create a discourse with how people experience and perceive the urban landscape.
Recent work embodies an awkward aesthetic as he balances the creation of finished and unfinished forms and structures that physically represent the idea of shift and flux, of ‘non-places’ which are not fully functional. Lisle often uses decorating brushes and rollers to apply enormous quantities of oil paint to a canvas. This creates vibrant explosions of colour. He contrasts this expressive act of painting with careful and methodical geometric and precise works. These approaches have made Lisle’s aesthetic remarkably diverse and induvial and has been the corner stone to his past achievements.
A notable achievement is he is a founding committee member of an independent collective called Alt-D. Within 6 months the collective represented ECA creatives on various online platforms, collaborated and curated a physical exhibition, produced an accompanying zine, and displayed on many large billboards in Edinburgh. His role was integral to the management and expansion of this grassroots project and highlights the significance of creating longstanding connections with other artists and programmes. His biggest achievement is to exhibit in RSA New Contemporaries 2022. This is high profile exhibition and a massive opportunity to exhibit to a large public audience and to produce high standard of work.
